The public inquiry into the Marchioness disaster, led by Lord Justice Clarke, was initiated to investigate the collision between the pleasure boat Marchioness and the dredger Bowbelle on the River Thames on August 20, 1989, which resulted in the tragic loss of 51 lives. The inquiry examined the causes of the collision, the adequacy of safety measures on the river, and the response to the disaster1. It concluded that poor lookout on both vessels was the primary cause of the accident and made 74 recommendations to improve safety on the Thames.
