Truth Recovery Independent Panel

The Truth Recovery Independent Panel is a non-statutory body appointed to investigate Mother and Baby Institutions, Magdalene Laundries, and Workhouses in Northern Ireland, focusing on truth, acknowledgment, and accountability

The Truth Recovery Independent Panel was established by the Northern Ireland Executive to investigate the experiences of individuals affected by Mother and Baby Institutions, Magdalene Laundries, and Workhouses in Northern Ireland. The panel, co-chaired by Dr. Leanne McCormick and Professor Sean O’Connell, consists of experts in various fields and representatives from victims and survivors1.

The panel's work is divided into two phases: a non-statutory Independent Panel and a full statutory Public Inquiry. The Independent Panel's role is to gather evidence through testimonies, archival research, and public engagement1. The findings will be compiled into a report, which will guide the Public Inquiry.

The panel has made five core recommendations, with several sub-recommendations, focusing on truth, acknowledgment, and accountability. The inquiry lasted 24 months and involved significant public engagement and collaboration with various agencies and experts1.

The panel has received support from organizations such as the Victims and Survivors Service, WAVE, and Adopt NI1.

In summary, the Truth Recovery Independent Panel is a comprehensive effort to uncover the truth about the experiences of individuals affected by these institutions, providing justice and acknowledgment to those impacted.
